Tre dager i San Juan

Eating in Patong

One of the best things about Thailand was the food. I think we were both exited to taste “real” Thai food and also to experience the whole range of taste that we would find as we traveled. We almost only ate at small places along the road, and even though I got sick, I don’t blame them for my sickness. Patong is one of the biggest and oldest tourist beaches in Phuket, so we had to look for the real places, but we found them 🙂

DSC_6528

The best one was this one. Small tables on the sidewalk, an old couple running the whole thing. The best thing about these kinds of places was that the food arrived maybe four minutes after we ordered. Every time.

DSC_6523

This was the whole thing.

DSC_6522

DSC_6532

DSC_6578

The second day we came back because the food was so good. But when we arrived they had a big party of maybe 30 people. A big family served by two people. Incredible. We had to wait for 15 minutes, and when we finally ordered they were so sorry we had to wait. But we were just fascinated by the party. Imagine taking your whole family to a kebab shop in Norway.

DSC_6580

DSC_6557

We also went to a very touristy place, but they did excellent bbq and had a terrible singer.

DSC_6559

DSC_6543

Mmmm, street food.

DSC_6587

Don’t you love it when you get actual coconut in your crepe and nutella?

06 – Kho Phi Phi

We stayed in Kho Phi Phi for three days, but we were too busy hanging out on the beach and diving to take any pictures. These are all from the day we arrived on the island.

DSC_6453

On the ferry out to the island. We forgot to apply sunscreen, so we got very sunburned.

DSC_6494

We did some discovering, but there were mostly young tourists and divers, so not much to see except nature. But we did see a whale shark, some beautiful fish and some sea slugs while diving. And the karst formations are remarkable. They made me want to explore Helgelandskysten in Norway.

DSC_6505

DSC_6507

We had cocktails, but there were too loud music and drunk people for it to be very fun.

05 – Wet market in Krabi

When we came to Krabi the skies opened, but we still needed some food, so we got to the market and hung out with the locals under the roofs.

The view from our hotel room of all the rain.

Mmmm, food.

The most amazing mango peeler. She also made fantastic sticky rice and mango. Best dessert ever.

DSC_6438

I’m pretty sure this is snails.

DSC_6440

And I wish I had tried this.

DSC_6443

She made something similar to pancakes and the green thing had coconut in it. Mmmmm.

04 – Sunday walking street

Something you can find in almost any Thai town (it seems) is a regular street marked. We lived in the street marked street in Chiang Mai and it was very popular with both tourists and locals.

Waffles!

We ended the day with some post cards.

04 – Treetop zip line

Back to Thailand again. One of the things we wanted to try was treetop zip lining! There were many companies that did this outside of Chiang Mai, so we chose the one with the longest glides. We were up super early that day, which was smart because a) fewer people want to get up at 5.30 on holiday and b) it’s colder in the mornings, so you don’t die of heat stroke.

The last stretch was 900m long and some of the lighter people didn’t get to the end,s o they had to be “rescued”, no problem for us…

DSC_6362

Obligatory group photo 😉

03 – we rollin’

On the day of our trip with the motor bike, we stopped by a water fall to cool down.

DSC_6128 DSC_6130

We passed the market stalls.

DSC_6132 DSC_6133

We walked up along the waterfall and found where they were playing in the water.

DSC_6136 DSC_6137 DSC_6142 DSC_6143

After the waterfall we went to Wat Doi Suthep to enjoy the temple. Then we drove further and found a hill tribe village. The day was almost over, but some shops were open so we could have a look at the traditional handicrafts.

DSC_6193

All the tourists had left for the day, so the people who lived there were out playing in the square.

DSC_6194 DSC_6195 DSC_6196

The handicraft was incredible. And so colourfull!

DSC_6198 DSC_6199 DSC_6200 DSC_6202

I tried some shorts on, but they were so heavily embroidered that they were too warm to wear.

DSC_6204 DSC_6205 DSC_6207 DSC_6208 DSC_6209

After all the window shopping we found some pancakes 🙂

ON our second day in Chiang Mai we rented a motor bike and drove to the temple Wat Doi Suthep, just outside the city. It is almost completely covered in gold and is a spectacular sight.

DSC_6145  DSC_6147

We walked up the stairs…

DSC_6149 DSC_6150

Entered the temple grounds.

DSC_6153 DSC_6154

We watched the girls dancing and the tombs of people who have donated to the temple.

DSC_6155 DSC_6156 DSC_6171

And to the marvel itself.

DSC_6167 DSC_6166 DSC_6165 DSC_6162 DSC_6161

Aren’t we pretty?

02 – first day of Chiang Mai, with people!

Here are pictures from our walk around the town. I kept forgetting to take pictures of our food (terrible blogger as I am), but here are some shorts from Chiang Mai!

DSC_6005

I have never used those flipflops as much as I did in Thailand, excellent footwear for swallen and hot feet.

DSC_6029

DSC_6037

We usually only brought water and maybe Lonely Planet while walking around, too hot to carry stuff.

01 – Bangkok

We arrived in Bangkok, Thailand at 9 in the morning, but hadn’t slept much during the flight, so we immediately went to bed. But we managed to see a little bit of Bangkok during our first day.

DSC_5955 DSC_5956

These trolleys are everywhere in Thailand and the people behind them cook food for almost the whole country.

DSC_5957 DSC_5958

And it tastes delicious!

DSC_5959 DSC_5961 DSC_5962

Street chess was very common

DSC_5967

This place was slightly bigger and even had six tables. We ate at these places the whole trip.

DSC_5971 DSC_5976

Everything is bought on the street, even though there is a huge mall just over the walkway.

Poster presenting i Puerto Rico!

Guess what?!?

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to inform you that your abstract “Current fluctuations in selection response of the Atlantic salmon genome discovered during ongoing domestication” reference 1089 has been accepted for POSTER presentation at SMBE 2014.

Yay! So now I only have to work my ass off to finish the results I need and to actually make this poster. But a very nice welcome home after almost a month away from the office.

DSC_1942 DSC_1943 DSC_1944 DSC_1946 DSC_1947 DSC_1948 DSC_1949

Ekstra flaks hadde jeg som ikke kjørte 😉
