Hello Oslo

I have now arrived in Oslo and am prepared for an unknown number of weeks here. Today has been slow, but I have actually started my programming course! Very exciting 🙂

This week will be about job applications, friends, programming and relaxing.

Bergen – Trondheim – Oslo

I have made a short stop in Bergen, just to catch a cheaper flight and have mostly spent the time writing job applications. I did not miss it…

Tonight I will be in Trondheim and then a lot of washing of clothes and floors will follow. And after some more writing and packing we will drive Dolly down to Oslo. And the a new time will start. This is really the first day in the rest of my life. After today everything will change. I will leave Trondheim and have no idea when I will go back. Trondheim is still home, but in two weeks or four months I will have a new home. Hopefully Erik will live there as well, but that is the only wish I have. Other than that I will take any place that will give me a job.

The next month I will go to Eriks cabin in the mountains, go to Øya – the music festival and to Uppsala for my interview. Other than that I will spend time with Erik and all my lovely friends and write a whole lot of job applications.

Udacity

I have decided that I need to learn programming. The idea has been with me for a while (a year or two), but I have had too many things on my mind to do anything about it. But now it has been on my To do list for a year and I find more and more job applications where programming skills are an advantage, so now I have enrolled for the Udacity course “Intro to computer programming”.

I know next to nothing about computer programming, but the courses seem solid and I have Erik to help me, so I think it will work out fine. I have given myself until the end of August to finish the first course and hopefully I will have started a more advanced one too. The courses are with videos with real university professors and tasks and quizzes, and there are final exams in all courses. And when you do the final exam you actually get a diploma, so you can use it when hunting for jobs. Lovely.

It will be exciting to see how it works. I hope I will manage everything. It’s strange not to have anything to do and everything to do at the same time.

This week

This week was the best. Just look at these three pictures

Flowers picked while walking back from Estenstaddammen. We brought dinner and spent the afternoon by the lake in the sun.

Saturday we spent at Lianvannet. We played boardgames, swam in the lake, had lunch and just enjoyed summer.

I finally came around to cut my bangs, so I can see again. I have done a lot of things this week that I should have done a while ago. Hair, shoes, new clothes, it was a good week.

Pancakes with strawberries for breakfast today. We have been eating a lot of good food lately. We had barbecued pinnekjøtt on Friday (great success btw) and a whole lambs leg yesterday.

I will spend the next two days writing job applications and then I will go for a real holiday for almost two weeks 🙂 I will be cycling along Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands with my family. I will bring my camera and hopefully take lots of pictures.

Trainers!

Look what I bought yesterday

They’re pink and grey and I am going to take them for a spin tonight. And as the weather is wonderful I really can’t wait 🙂

I also tried to buy this one

image

But all the stores were out, so I bought one from Wilfa instead.

And why did I do all this shopping? I was invited to a PhD interview in Uppsala in August! 😀 You know, the world is on my side these days.

Bra helg

Se! Helg!

På vei til Munkholmen

Det regnet, men var fint ute på Munkholmen. Nå har mamma dratt, sola kommet fram igjen og helga er snart over

Lab work at an end

(Photo from Instagram: bulldozerborg. My lab journal, the samples (DNA extractions) I am using and the ones I selected for today’s run)

The lab work seems to be over now. I will complete the PCR and gel electrophoresis I’m doing right now and then the next thing on my do to list is to send everything to Germany and then wait for my results. And then we will see if we get the same patterns (or lack of patterns really) as I did with the microsatellites last year (aka in my master thesis).

As I have told you, I am applying for jobs like my life depended on it (because it does) and yesterday I was invited to my first job interview! I know an interview is not a job, but it was a great boost to get invited after only four applications. It made me believe that I will actually manage to find a job before the summer is over and all my money has run out.

I have started to come to terms with the grade on my master thesis and as I have had to look at other options than only PhDs (even though I am still able to do a PhD in some universities) I have begun to wonder if I really want that life. The secure and safe life in an ordinary company with an apartment and 8-4 days sounds better and better every week. Maybe what I need now is not a life of even more uncertainty, but the boring A4 life. I mean, I have never tried it. This summer I have completed 18 years of continuous school attendance. That’s a lot.

Well, we’ll see. The next month will be exiting, to say the least.

Dagens

Drowned in lab

As I am currently working in the lab, trying to figure out how to do this PCR, I will give you this

I have found it on the internet, so thank you internet. So you can think about this important issue, while I worry about concentrations, cycling times and temperatures.

But, there will be beer tonight (not that I can afford it at this moment)! I love how people are finished with their masters and want to celebrate. Now there are celebrations almost every day 🙂 And I have managed to get my excersising plan back on its feet. Hurray!

Fail

🙁

It didn’t work. I realize how spoilt I am, but it still makes me sad that I failed.

But I will be working in the lab to get more results for an article based on my master thesis and everything will work out fine (just as everyone says it will). But I’m sad anyway.

This is the first time in eight years that I will have to reconsider my plans for the future. Good luck, to me.

Busy -> nervous

I am back in Trondheim, I am busy, but have a social life and get enough sleep at night. I just, haven’t had time to sit down with my computer (or Erik’s computer as it really is), to post pictures from Romania, because this final oral exam is hanging over me.

TWO DAYS!

Then I’ll get my final grade on my thesis and will finished at NTNU (and probably in Trondheim as well). It is such a strange feeling.

Thursday we’ll barbeque with people from the Museum and this weekend Erik and I will go hiking and get some fresh air. And on Monday I will start working in the lab and continue to apply for jobs and PhDs. I sent one while in Romania and will send another this week. This job hunting business is tiresome. But I still have no clue where I will be in the end of August, so I just have to keep on writing (and googling).

How’s your summer holiday? Started yet?

Instant instagram fan

It might be the sun and the lack of Erik to entertain me, but I really like this instagram business.

Dinner last night. But the beer after was good! Today I have bought wegies, so today will be better.

Sol med kjæreste

Det har vært helt magisk vær i Trondheim de siste dagene. Og selv om jeg har nytt været, solt meg og til og med tatt årets første bad, så slår sol med kjæreste sol uten kjæreste ned i støvlene.

Out and about

After weeks of “OMG I have so much to do!” I have now arrived at “I have no idea what to do to fill all this time”. I blame lack of master thesis and lack of boyfriend. So my plans for the next week are:

1. study for my exam

2. exercise a lot

3. do all the chores I have postponed for 6 months

4. spend time in the sun (which is here! Yay!)

5. no idea

In a week I’m going to Bucharest in Romania for a forum/conference/thing with WOSM Europe and I am actually very happy about it. It will be fun. And I will have two whole days in Bucharest to relax and study as well.

And when I get back from Bucharest, Erik will be back again 🙂 and you know what? Then the summer will be here! Can’t wait!

Hurra!

(ja, jeg vet det er 16. mai)

Men HURRA!

Flowers

I don’t know how, but I keep finding new blogs. This time: The house that Lars buildt. It’s a bit of everything, but mostly flowers and interiour design. I have never been interested in interiour design, but I think the fact that I will move somewhere this autumn have something to do with it….

Bears and instagram

I now have instagram. I haven’t really grasped how it works outside my phone, but maybe it doesn’t. Anyhow, I’m Bulldozerborg and this was my first pic

We had bears for breakfast yesterday. Erik finds the weirdest things on the internet, but if it results in pancakes for breakfast, it’s ok 🙂

And again!

As you know, Erik and I spent a weekend at Britannia hotel here in Trondheim a week ago. We had paid a little extra for our room because we intended to spend a lot of time there, but the room wasn’t that nice and we were a bit disappointed. We made a long list of all the things that were missing or bad in our room and went down first thing to report them. They couldn’t do anything about almost any of it, so we repeated it when we checked out, because we thought we might get a discount. We didn’t get a discount, but we got a free pass to the Spa 🙂 The Spa was the best thing in the whole hotel so we are very pleased.

See you soon, Britannia!
