Exam coming up
Scones for my coworkers
Probably one of the simples things I have tried to make is scones. I was baking for my coworkers and because I didn’t dare do something with yeast, I made scones.
I picked the recipe from one of my old recipe books from school, so the scones are probably not very British, but simple. The dough was made just by mixing everything together. I guess I should have known that the recipe was too easy, but sometimes that is what you want. Something simple.
I then cut the dough in four, flattened the loaves on plates and cut them again in four. I hope you excuse my orange kitchen walls, we haven’t decided what to do with them yet. Unfortunately they are not the best for food photography.
They didn’t look very pretty, but I hoped they would look better after they had been in the oven. And no matter how they looked, I knew they would taste really good.
I was sorry they didn’t rise more, but I have never been good at getting things as fluffy and light as they should be. But nobody thought that baking was my forté, did they.
In the end they tasted really nice and everybody at work were very happy, so I am content. What do you like to bake?
More plots
Okey, so this is how far I have come on my plot. This is just a cropped version of the total plot, each column is a chromosome and where the points (SNPs or genetic marker) are placed along the y-axis depends on their significance. The ones under the red line are the actual significant ones.
I still have a lot to improve and still so many different things I will try with the data, but this is a step in the right direction.
PS: did you see the chess game yesterday? It was fantastic! So exiting! And we will see in just a couple of hours if we today will have the first Norwegian World Champion of Chess 🙂

Scatterplot in R
This is what I have been trying to make the last week, a scatterplot a bit more fancy than this. I have 22 chromosomes (not three species), and I want a horizontal line to indicate significance. But as I have never done any work in R until now (except for courses) this is going a bit slow.
In addition to that there is a group project and presentation in two weeks and a 10 credit course exam in 2,5 weeks. Am I getting nervous? Or working late almost every day? Indeed.
Yesterday’s trip to IKEA

Too busy to blog
New coat(s)!
My mom found some clothes that didn’t belong to anybody in the attic, and luckily for me, two of them fitted perfectly. They were also just the kind of coats I had been eyeing this season. I only had pictures of one of them on the iPad, so here is the captain coat:
It is black, double breasted, curves in at the waist and out over the hips (perfect for me). The right pocket needs some attention and the lining is in rags, but I will deal with that later. Right now it is the perfect roomy coat when you want some structure to the outfit.
You can see my new, bulky boots as well, nice huh? 🙂
The other coat is dusty pink, long, elegant, with big pockets and no buttons. Super cool!
Isabel Marant for H&M

Local campus beer in Norwich
From my last night in Norwich, we went for a couple of pints of the campus beer with the participants that worked at TGAC and the uni. There they have a pub on campus and this Friday was quiz night.
We bought pints to prepare ourselves.
Read up on the local campus brewery.
We had the local brew, which was actually brewed for the John Innes Centre where the TGAC is, isn’t that cool?! Campus beer!
New friends and old colleagues having a pint on a Friday night. So nice.
I wish we had a place on campus where we could have a pint as well.
“Strong hoppy mixture, ideal for propagating discourse and contains elements essential for the vigorous growth of friendship.” That is the way we all like it. And the labels look so professional, don’t you think?
Here you can see “the vigorous growth of friendship” 🙂 The evening ended after a nice meal and some more beers. A good way to end a really good week of bioinformatics course.
How do you like to spend your Friday evenings? Would you like a campus beer? Or do you wish for something else? Maybe I am the only one, for there seems to be nothing happening in Ås at least.
A date night out
Almost exactly a month ago we went for a lovely date night. Erik invited me out to Izakaya, a Japanese restaurant by St. Olavs plass.
It has a very simple menu of small dishes and you just order as many as you want.
Kimchi, for instance. And the people who work there are very helpful and tell you a lot of information about the food.
Korean pankakes and chicken.
Japanese art and everything.
We even had japanese cocktails.
My trusted red jacket bought at Zara in Tallin ten years ago.
Then we went to the movies and stopped by a mexican place for margueritas on the way.

World Chess Championship 2013
I have a slumbering love for Chess, I have to admit. I have never actually played, but I am very intrigued by Magnus Carlsen, who grew up in Bærum like me, and who are just a few years younger than myself. And right now something historical is happening, the World Chess Championship has just opened in Chennai, India and Magnus Carlsen can possibly become the World Champion at a age of 22 after a steep rise in the world of chess since he was about 13. It is mesmerizing to read about what he has accomplished and I am so impressed by how goal oriented he is.
I guess this is how sports are, that you are exited because you come from the same place as the sportsman and because you are fascinated by the sport itself. So for the first time in a while I will try to follow the events in India and cheer from home. NRK will send all the matches and have very good commentators so that us ordinary folk can understand what’s happening.
If you are interested in learning more about Magnus you can find two documentaries on nrk.no and several news articles and a very good article on Wikipedia.
